WORKSHOPS
Current Schedule
Crafternoons - DOUBLE DOWN!
TWO Crafternoons, TWO opportunities to boost your costume collection using your own TWO hands! We will be reprising our Pantaloon Crafternoon from a couple years ago, as well as holding a whole new Crafternoon workshop to make accent skirts!
Register for both and take $10 off. Use the coupon code "DoubleDown".
No sewing skills? No problem! Have a sewing machine and some sewing savvy? Bring it along! No matter what your experience, everyone will lend their skills to the collective as Shay guides the group through the process of cutting, sewing, and finishing a bevvy of colorful costuming.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must pre-register for these workshops or else you will not have the materials list in time to participate. Once you have registered, I will send out a materials list and recommendations for how and where to purchase your materials. For the saris, they are usually on Ebay and must be shipped long distances, so ordering early as possible is vital. I also have a few options for sale if you are unable to procure one in time for the workshop, so e-mail me for options and reserve one for yourself!

Crafternoon: Sari Split Skirts
Saturday, February 21st, 1-4pm
@ Deep Roots Dance at m'illumino
6921 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle
Show up with a pile of fabric; walk away with a costume piece and be proud to say, "I made this!" This Crafternoon will focus on Sari Split Skirts. We will be re-purposing beautiful vintage sequin saris to make a versatile over-skirt which will add variety, color, and sparkle to your costume ensembles. Worn over pantaloons or our beloved fluffy skirts, these skirts are perfect for different luscious looks for stage and studio alike.
Participants will work collaboratively, pooling our skills to measure, cut, sew, and finish each piece so everyone walks away with a lovely new skirt. The fitting and sewing techniques employed will be incredibly simple, so it's a great way for bare beginner sewers and crafters to dip their toes in the costuming waters.
Registration includes a pre-workshop shopping guide, three hours of hands-on guidance from a costuming professional, printed instructions for future reference, and elastic. Limit 12 participants.

Host Shay
Want to dip your toe into tribal style belly dance?
Looking to supplement your current studies with new disciplines and concepts?
It's easier than you think to host a workshop with Shay Moore in your area.
Shay teaches fun and inspiring workshops for dancers of all skill levels. She is able to cater to mixed level attendance, encouraging and nurturing beginner students while keeping even the most experienced dancer challenged.
Contracts are scary, right?
Not at all! The contract is simple and clear, and the rates very reasonable. You can host as large or as small a workshop event as you like, from one three-hour workshop in an afternoon, to a full-blown weekend of workshops complete with an evening show. It all depends on what amount of work you want to put into it, and what volume of information and experience you want to get out of it.
Isn't it complex? How can I make it happen by myself?
Many dancers collaborate with their classmates or other local instructors to share the task of organizing workshops. It's a great way to build some community, and share in the fun the workshop will bring to you and your dance community. Thanks to the internet, advertising and promoting an event has become cheaper and easier, allowing you to reach your prospective attendees easily. And we will of course help promote the workshop through our social media pages, with a wide reach to spread the word.
So what's it really like to host Shay?
If you would like to speak with any previous hosts for references and advice, e-mail contacts can be provided of those are willing to pass on a little of their wisdom and experience. Or pop over to the Reviews page right now to see what past participants and hosts have had to say about Shay's teaching.
Okay, I'm in! What do I do next?
Pick a topic and let's hit the ground running! To secure a date, only a $100 deposit and signed contract is needed, so the up-front cost is minimal. E-mail anytime to review contract terms and discuss scheduling.

Potential Topics
ATS® - Prime and Polish
This workshop is for all levels, from beginners to advanced. Our goal? To learn and/or polish our foundation ATS® repertoire. Beginner tribalistas and tribal curious dancers from other styles will love this workshop for the new moves, grooves, and inspirations it will provide. Intermediate and advanced ATS dancers will benefit from digging into their fundamentals, hearing the lessons they know so well taught with perhaps a slightly different slant than they have learned from their previous instructors, and seeing ways to improve their technique with a fresh eye. ATS® instructors will have the opportunity to see how another experienced instructor breaks down the foundation concepts, picking up some new tricks to add to their teaching kit.
This workshop can be tailored to suit a variety of skill and experience levels. Let us know what you have in mind, or if it is a mixed group, trust in our extensive teaching experience to adapt on-the-go to make the class challenging for all.
Finger Cymbals - All Play, No Fear!
This workshop has sold out at multiple festivals in recent years--finger cymbals are hot and everyone wants to learn!
Drawing on methods passed down from Jamila Salimpour, the grand-momma of tribal bellydance in America and a master finger cymbal player and instructor, and blending various other methods collected over the years, together we will explore finger cymbals as the exciting musical instrument they are. We'll learn some drills to warm up both the mind and body for nimble playing, discuss a little music theory, and then dig into various different classic cymbal patterns. We will round out the workshop by creating music together, skipping around the rhythmic landscape with new-found confidence.
This workshop will not require much movement, as we will be sitting most, if not all of the time. Dress comfortably, and bring your finger cymbals. Suited for students of all skill levels and experience; just bring an enthusiasm for learning!
Cook Your Own Combos
We can all agree that the best recipes come from fresh ingredients. In this workshop, we will learn some fun moves and combos--some "recipes"--and determine what "ingredients" went into creating them. Then we will play with the process of how moves are created, sprinkle a dash of this and a dash of that, adding some spice to create your own personal flavor. At the end of the workshop, you will have a collection of combinations and concepts you can play with as-is, or use your new creative tools to remix them into something unique to you and/or your group.
Understanding of the following tribal vocabulary valuable: Egyptian, Arabic, Taqsim and Teverse Taqsim/Maya, Turkish Shimmy
Creative Combos: Old School Style Bellydance
Tribal bellydance as we know it today grew from the roots of American bellydance on the west coast, specifically the Jamila Salimpour legacy in the Bay Area of California and the creative offshoots which spread like wildfire around the country. In this workshop we will explore some of the movement vocabulary and traditions which grew from this stylistic movement, and will put together a series of combinations paired with fun and challenging finger cymbal patterns.
It is recommended that students have at least some previous bellydance study in any style and are familiar with basic bellydance concepts.
Digging Down To The Roots - The Rich History of Tribal Bellydance
Complete with a slideshow full of eye candy and informative info-graphics, this workshop takes participants on a tour of the Tribal Family Tree. Starting with the original Salimpour legacy, traveling through the branches, and out through the flowering buds of current innovation, we trace the visual and philosophical origins of the art of tribal bellydance we know today.
Putting The Tribal in Bellydance - Exploring The Global Influences of Tribal Costuming
Students of all experience levels will enjoy this presentation and discussion of the key elements of tribal bellydance costuming, as influenced by clothing and aesthetics from around the world. A slideshow full of gorgeous imagery from tribal cultures around the globe paired with some lush costuming from current day innovators in dance and costuming will get the creative juices flowing. Handouts reinforce the lessons so you can take these new influences home and thoughtfully incorporate them into your own creations!
Performance Makeup
In this workshop will explore the key elements of performance makeup, and will also include some more advanced tips n' tricks to take your look to the next level. Dancers of all styles will find these techniques useful in creating their own stage-worthy look. Students take home a detailed handout with a personally tested and recommended product shopping guide, tips for building a makeup collection, and Shay's hints for successful makeup application.
